More than four outstanding decades of care!

As was the case when CHEO first opened its doors on May 17, 1974, children and youth continue to require dedicated and specialized pediatric health services. CHEO has established an excellent team of medical professionals, first class treatment, as well as world-renowned research activities to meet the needs of our young patients – making it a first class pediatric health care centre.

Here are a number of interesting facts and tidbits about the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Did you know?

  • The first honourary Chairperson of the Building Campaign was Lester B. Pearson.
  • The hospital had 301 inpatient beds when it first opened in 1974. It now has 165 beds, reflecting a change in the delivery of health care services. The trend over the years has been to decrease the length of stay in the hospital, as well as to offer ambulatory care and outpatient clinics as a means to “de-institutionalize” patient care.
  • In the early to mid 1990’s, a newly diagnosed diabetic patient was hospitalized for 8 days. Today, that same patient could be treated in the Emergency Department, sent home and then asked to return for monitoring and education sessions for 3-5 days in the Diabetic clinic with no hospitalization required.
  • 48 employees celebrate 35 years of continued service with CHEO when the hospital celebrated its own 35th anniversary in the summer of 2009.
  • The CHEO Bear was born on May 17, 1984 under the astrological sign of Gemini. He enjoys taking long walks, cuddles and his favorite foods are berries & figs.
  • CHEO patients have rubbed elbows with some very impressive people in the past thirty years. Among special visitors to the hospital are: Bert & Ernie, the Pink Panther, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Barney, Ben Johnson, Wayne Gretzky, Mila Mulroney, Hilary Clinton, Marie Osmond, Carrie Underwood and Sharon, Lois & Bram.
  • CHEO’s striped pajamas and nightgowns have withstood 40 years of changing fashion. The striped PJs & nightgowns -- in their many shades of blue, green, pink and yellow -- have become a recognizable CHEO trademark.
