The part-time Crisis Intervention Worker will function as a member of the CHEO Crisis Team, together with Psychiatry, working in the CHEO Emergency Department on weekends.


§ Be a first responder for the CHEO Crisis Intervention Service

§ Psychosocial assessments of those children/youth and their families who present 1) to CHEO Emergency Department in an acute psychiatric crisis; 2) are being held in the CHEO Emergency Department overnight pending a mental health assessment in the morning

§ Liaison with CHEO Emergency staff and Psychiatry on-call services

§ Recommendations re: case disposition including admission to Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, discharge home or short-term follow-up

§ Liaison with CHEO, ROH and community mental health services

§ Monitoring of service utilization

§ Collection of outcome measurement data

§ Participate in in-service training regarding the management of psychiatric crisis in children and youth

§ Work rotation on weekends for days and evenings. If available, may be able to provide coverage during the week days Monday-Friday for the full time crisis intervention workers.


§ Police Record Check (PRC) (Essential)

§ Masters degree in health or social science profession (Essential)

§ Eligibility for registration with discipline-specific professional college (Essential)

§ Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in children and youth (Essential)

§ Minimum of five years of counseling experience with children, youth and families (Essential)

§ Ability to establish rapport with children, youth and families in crisis (Essential)

§ Suicide prevention training (Preferred)

§ Non-violent crisis intervention (Preferred)

§ Brief therapy training (Preferred)

§ Ability to assess and prioritize needs (Essential)

§ Ability to work both collaboratively and independently (Essential)

§ Ability to collaborate with other disciplines in a medical setting (Essential)

§ Sound knowledge of community resources (Essential)

§ Bilingualism (French/English) (Essential)
