International Adoption Clinic (IAC)
Lead by: Dr. Heather MacDonnell
Location: CHEO Clinic C1
Division: Pediatric Medicine; Infectious Disease RN
The International Adoption Clinic at CHEO opened in the fall of 2003 under the direction of Dr. Chuck Hui (now Division Head, Infectious Diseases) and has evaluated hundreds of children post-adoption across Ontario. Dr. Heather MacDonnell, the current clinic director, is a consultant pediatrician with extra training in Global Health and clinical expertise with children adopted internationally. She has assessed patients since the clinic’s beginning, being instrumental in the formation of the IAC. Dr. MacDonnell gives talks for prospective adoptive parents at international adoption agencies, as well as continuing medical education for health care professionals.
The clinic expects most children will come from Eastern Ontario or Western Quebec and have recently arrived in Canada. Referrals are also accepted for children who have been in Canada longer, where there are medical issues/questions related to international adoption.
The key Canadian publication for International Adoption (Public Health Agency of Canada) was co-authored by Drs. Hui, MacDonnell and Susan Kuhn (Calgary).
